Maire vs. Moya

Postby Mike:-) » Tue Sep 16, 2003 2:54 pm

Hi! I'd like to ask which name, or rather spelling, you like better. I voted for "Maire", because I'm used to this version very much. Actually, I found the change from "Maire" into "Moya" some kind of a commercial marketing gimmick, considering she released so many albums under the true name.

And don't get me wrong  I really appreciate Moya's right to create her own public image and choose the best spelling of her name. 8) Just wanted to know your opinion...

"Maire". Simply because that's how I'm used to seeing it spelled. However, I will address her as "Moya" in correspondence, if that's her preference.

I prefer Moya.

I can't type that squiggly line over the a.
It makes it harder for new fans to find Moya at Amazon and the like.
It looks nicer too.

Hi, everyone. I voted for Maire. She's been using that name for so long and I'm just so used to it and I think it will really confuse others in the future who buy Two Horizons and want more of her music but are too lazy to look it up for themselves. However, right along with skippy, I hate having to type in the "a" with the accent. So I don't! But then there are some people who just always have to have everything perfect, so now because of those kinds of people, I just write "Moya." And then there are some other kinds of people - those who have a hard time pronouncing things. So it is, for them, a good thing Moya changed her name. Ah, whatever. If Moya is happy, I'm happy!

Definately Máire. It's the real thing. It's more Irish. :)

It's actually quite easy:
While holding down the "alt" key, type in 0225 on the number pad, then release the 'alt' key, and there it is! á

I voted for Maire because I think that spelling of her name is much more prettier, just my humble opinion, then Moya, but I guess Moya would be easier to pronounce though.

Moya is fine

Postby ecommoford » Wed Sep 17, 2003 9:57 pm

Moya is fine. Moya changed it to this incarnation because after years of mispelling and mispronounciation, (what do you expect from non gaelic speakers Moya?) she decided to spell it as it was pronounced to make it easier all round. I'm use to Maire and often type it naturally and have to check myself and change it back to Moya. It wasn't done as hype or for marketing reasons. Maire is an unusual name and hard to pronounce, let alone spell for those not versed in her native language, so it was changed.

I also voted for Moya, although I actually don't have that strong a preference either way.

However she spells it, it's a lovely name!

I just love the spelling of Máire! It's totally understandable that she'd want ot use the phonetic spelling though since just about eveyone who isn't Irish would pronounce it incorrectly.

In the heart and soul of all that Maire has brought through to this realm, lives her heritage. It is the foundation of her music, and perhaps even her spirituality. Maire is the name that she was given at birth...
