Forum is Back Up and Running

Postby Angoid » Mon Nov 21, 2005 11:05 pm

Hiya all,

As you can see, the forum is back up and running :) thanks to the good people at Essex Hosting.

As a result of this, one or two changes will be necessary so please near with us while we carry those out.

Firstly, I'd like to thank Admin for letting me stay on here as an Administrator so I can assist with the general running at a technical level. I directly manipulated myself to have that status when we were restoring the forum so we had a known good Administrative login, as the original one had been destroyed by the hacker.

Secondly, remote avatars have been turned off. This means that if your avatar is not uploaded, but stored on your own website / host (such as Photobucket) it will no longer work. The main reason for this is security; this hacker obtains access to phpBB boards using a flaw in Internet Explorer that executes malicious code stored in a modified JPEG image. Please upload your avatars instead of linking to them remotely.

Thirdly, we need to upgrade the forum software to the latest version of phpBB in order to help us remain secure. We will need to regularly check for upgrades and updates on a regular basis as an Administrative team in order to reduce the risk of this ever happening again. One of the things we're always telling people to do in the technical support forums is to keep their computers up-to-date with all the latest Microsoft patches to help reduce the risk of problems caused by viruses, trojans, spyware, etc. It's much the same here.

To achieve the initial upgrade (which will be the biggie, and a learning curve for all of us involved in the project) we may need to take the forum down temporarily. The downtime will be kept to an absolute minimum, and normal service restored as soon as practically possible afterwards.

We'll try to keep the changes as seemless as possible so you'll notice very little difference!
If you don't know what eschatology is then don't worry; it's not the end of the world.

One big vote of thanks to Angus.
There's still a bit of work to do so bear with us but the main thing is we're back and not before time.
I know Angus would want a big vote of thanks going to Chris and Jim on the Essex Forum thanks from all of us for the initiative and for stepping in right on cue.

Just wanted to point out as well that one of the side effects of the hacking was that my account as admin was tampered with by our Turkish friend and consequently I have had to re-register.
Thats why my current postings are under a different name.
