I think there is a small minority of folk who still use dial-up, and for them having to download huge pictures in full each time the page is going to make the site unusably slow.
Allowing people to upload their own images to this server would be a potential security risk, but something worth bearing in mind.
I'm also conscious that the new header banner, lovely though it is (I got it from the main site) is some 232K so not very dial-up friendly ... but that's something we'll be working on this coming year.

As monitors are now bigger than before (both physically and in terms of pixels), I think upping the allowable size of avatars would not be a bad idea. However, it's a case of getting the balance right so as to not allow anyone to have such a huge avatar that everytime they post, the thread is swamped by this huge avatar.

A general forum tidy-up is being planned, so that should come up then .... I'll check to see what thoughts the mods have and we'll make a decision then.

EDIT: Dave, your avatar is 62 across by 110 down, so definitely has been squished somewhat, as has others. I'll look into changing that as a matter of priority (the new admin control panle is substantially more complex than the previous one, so not sure where to do it yet!).

I've just updated the maximum avatars size to 150 by 150 (it was 100 by 100), but it's the aspect ratio that's wrong.
Avatars are coming out as squares, and there doesn't seem to be a setting to preserve or override the aspect ratio, and that's why some avatars are coming out distorted.

If you have a 62 by 110 avatar being represented in a square of say, 120 by 120, then it will come out distorted.

Am continuing my investigations, but please note that an update to phpBB3 has been released since I upgraded the forum, so I'll try to schedule some time in to do that first as this may address the issue for us. I think it's a fairly small update, not a full upgrade, and will probably take in the order of an hour to do.

Edit: Avatars seem to be getting forced into a 100 x 100 sqaure. Mine is 120 x 90, and is also being distorted currently. In my case though, it's far less notioceable because there are no people in it and the amount by which it is being distorted is less severe because of the initial dimensions (120:90 is closer to 100:100 than is 62:110).

Here we go again.....

The good:
This has been recognised as a conversion issue in an earlier release of phpBB3, and has been posted in the phpBB development area:
http://tracker.phpbb.com/browse/PHPBB3-3843

The bad news:
If you read that post, you'll see what has been done about it and what will be done about it going forward: absolutely zilch, zip, nada :(

The ugly:
We'll have to manually re-upload our avatars for the new sizes to take effect. Just taking out the sizes in the UCP and letting the board work them out again is not enough - it has no effect (I tried this before posting for former post).

Sigh...pity as my avatar is a quite old picture of me and I've changed a little since then. ;) I'll see if I can get around to adjusting one of my photographs to a reasonable size (ensuring it still looks good) and perhaps upload it in due course.

At the moment though, my avatar actually looks a lot better right now....I guess mine didn't have any trouble.

Thanks for the update, Angus.

I've tried resizing said avatar myself, so Moya and I have shrunk a bit (metaphorically speaking, Moya, if you're reading this! :P), but at least the aspect ratio looks OK now.

Thanks for your help, all! :D

If I get a bit of time I may well see if I can write a script to look at avatar sizes and correct them, if they're stored in the database.
If I do, I may well see about releasing it to the phpBB community at large, but no promises for now, I think....

Hi Angus,

I wonder if you could help me....I have a picture that I want to use as my avatar, I've resized it to 150x150 pixels, but the sixe turned out higher than 20kb (only by 8 kb).

Image

Is there a way you can make this work for me? :) I know you have a lot on your plate in general but I've done my best on this one. It's the new and improved me! :D

Thanks !
Rick

Hi Phantas,

I'm sending you a PM with my email address in it - send your avatar (full-size one) to me on that email address and I'll see if I can resize it for you.

Thanks!
