Harry's Game Single

Postby RunrigCorvusCoraxFan » Wed Oct 05, 2011 3:56 pm

Having got this single, is it me that Harry's Game sounds different as does Strayed Away?
There you stood in front of me
Dressed in glory, white to see
Spell-bound on the deep blue skies
Created on high
Cold and warm, you set one's heart
'Cause you're the mighty one

I assume you mean the original vinyl single? It may be a slightly different mix, or just the differences between CD and vinyl (and vinyl ALWAYS sounds better to me!).

Hmm... I'll have to dig out my record player at some point and give them both a listen.

I swear on Fuaim, it sounds slower.

Hmm... well comparing your Mp3 with my CD the earlier parts of the song don't match up - they're a second or two out. However towards the end of the song they're about equal. Unless I've done my maths wrong that is. The song starts seven seconds in on your MP3, so I've deducted seven seconds from the CD timing when comparing.

Perhaps they're slightly different mixes - or we're both going mad!

Front bits, beginning of vinyls pops or crackles.

Perhaps taking that out and see if that matches.

Cleaned version

I swear Maire (Moya) sounds different as does production?

Someone sent me Fuaim one, as I only have cassette version as present.

Well, I've dug out my records, and compared the Fuaim CD, Harry's Game single and the Mhorag 's na horo Gheallaidh single, and you're right, there's definitely some differences there!

I've imported all three versions into Audacity to remove any silences from the beginning of each version. Both listening to them together, and comparing the wave forms, the version on the Fuaim CD and Mhorag single are the same (although the speed on my record player may be slightly out as they were slightly out of time), and the Harry's Game version goes at a different speed, some parts of the song seem longer and others shorter. The Harry's Game version comes out three seconds longer.

I've not compared it with the Fuaim LP yet, however I'd imagine that would be the same as the CD.

You both make me smile, what a thorough research! Any ideas though on how this can be? I can't really imagine they re-recorded it, so has it to do with the mixing?

Lol, thanks Mise!

It really is an obscure song to re-record to use as a b-side rather than using the same version as Fuaim/Mhorag, so perhaps it could be a different mix - or when RCA asked to use the song, Tara sent over a previously unused recording that had been rejected for Fuaim?

Who knows, there are some surprising edits/remastered versions of songs out there. Whilst backing up all of my vinyl/CDs to the computer I've discovered edited versions of Skellig and Atlantic Realm as b-sides - who knows why they were edited - it's not as if they were short of room on the CDs!

I havn't got Mhorags or Fuaim on Vinyl, but I thinkit would be same. I do want to get Clannad singles before Harry's Game. Harry's game, doesn't sound deep as she does on Fuiam.

It could be CD singles were quite new in late 80s?

By 1989 CD singles had been around for a few years - these are 5" CDs, so there's room enough for an album on them. If they were 3" CDs (I miss those cute little CDs) I could understand the edits such as the Hourglass edit which did appear on 3" CD. The only reason I could imagine is RCA/BMG intended to release them on 3" CD and changed their minds (for cost?) and released them on 5" instead.

I see, I need to get a turntable as the stereo isn't cutting.
