I have voted for Máire,it's her original name and looks more Irish than Moya.It doesn't make a difference when it comes to her music of course,I happened to be in Leo's a few weeks ago when Máire was back home for a few days.It was fantastic to see her singing with her father on the accordion. :D

I guess I feel whatever way her preference is that's the way it should be. After all my 'birth name' is Michele but the only ones that called me that was my dad, stepgramma, or our lovely priest. I much prefer Shelly especially all these years later...I'm also a ONE L Michele, so between people spelling it wrong, which was frustrating in itself, to have one's name pronounced wrong and probably totally unintelligible has to be so much more so. I love the charm of the original spelling though and the heritage of it!!!

Moya

I prefer Máire. Moya sounds too Enya-ish

Is this just an impression or do Moya's fans dislike Enya (and her music)?

I've noticed many quotes about this needful distinction between the 2 sisters... Why?

Welcome, Calogero. As family members Moya and her highly successful sister get on fine, notwithstsnding any myths about a family rift. Moya does appreciate being regarded as an artist in her own right, clear of the shadow of an act that has become Big Business.

You may want to look up the Podge & Rodge interview of Moya on YouTube, by the way.

I think that a lot of the people on this forum are fans of Enya as well as Moya. I certainly am, though I favor Moya because her music feels more direct and personal, and because being a Moya fan is so much fun. You get this fantastic community here on the forum, you can go see your favorite artist in concert and have conversations with her afterwards (A lot of us have met Moya in person, just look at our avatars!), and sometimes we get special treats like chats with Moya here on this forum.

Anyway, though I love both sisters' music (and Brídín's as well, check her CD out!) it gets tiresome to always have to say "Moya is Enya's sister" whenever you are explaining who Moya is. Like Turlough said, I think that a lot of fans want her to be more recognized as the distinct artist that she is. There is no hostility or ill will towards Enya here, only a desire to see Moya get the recognition that she deserves. :)

Welcome to the forum! I hope that you come to love this community as much as we all do!

Dear A_S,

Thanks for your kind and welcoming words to me.

only a desire to see Moya get the recognition that she deserves.

This desire has already been fulfilled years ago! Moya Brennan has won her recognition all over the world now. Especially among US and UK Christians.
I live in Belgium and still I got to know her as an artist 10 years ago, didn't even know at that time that she was Enya's sister. I was surprised when I heard of their parenthood.

I have to go with "Moya" as my preference. Every time I see the name "Maire" I hear it as "Mare," like the female horse. Stupid I know, but I can't hear "Maire" as "Moya." Maybe if I learned Gaelic one day!

It seems that "Máire" is pronounced as "Moya" only in parts of Ireland. Somewhere in the south I heard "Máire" pronounced as something like Mo-re. Learning Irish, dialects can be pretty confusing. You learn something in one part of Ireland and in another part they'll tell you that things are pronounced and expressed differently.

It must be a strange feeling to use the phonetic version of ones name but being an internationally successful singer, it can be an advantage indeed. It's hard enough for many employees to spell Enya and Moya correctly.
I can remember an incident in a shop in London, which went about like this:

"Hello, I'm looking for the special deluxe edition of the album 'Amarantine' by Enya"

"E-N-J-A - there aren't any entries."

"Enya is written with a Y"

"E-N-J-A-Y - nothing!"

and it went on like that. Next time I have to ask for one of Enya's or Moya's records, I'll just write the name down.

moya or maire - well, this seems to be an endless discussion...

i voted for moya for the following reasons:
- i'm not irish and i think the changing is in one way a rapprochement for all others.
i mean, my name is rosario and nearly everytime someone asks for my name i see all these bewildered faces who seem to ask "ro-what?" because as beeing an italian name it's totally unusual here in switzerland... so i tell them to call me simply "rossi", that's way easier

- moya sounds in one way more familiar. ok, for all irish who are familiar from the beginning with maire it's different :)

however, i'm thankful that maire changed for artistic reasons to moya so i finally learned to pronounce in the right way her name (i think i'm better gonna spare how i pronounced it earlier... )
...because it's a wonderful name :D
