Altan albums

Postby Siobhan » Mon Sep 29, 2008 6:18 pm

Hi guys,

I was wondering if there is any Altan live album. My dad was so impressed in Leo`s by Mairead`s playing that I thought it`d be a great present for him. If there is anything like that...? :)

Hi Siobhan,

I was up in Maine on a summer trip with my family, and we stopped in at a celtic music shop in Bar Harbor, and well long story short they had a selection of Altan cds.
At the time I was a relatively new fan but was majorily impressed w/ Mairead's fiddling, so I figured that I'd go with the cd called "The Best of Altan". At the time I didn't know that it was a double album, with the first cd being studio recorded and the second being a live cd.

Here's a link to Amazon for the cd:
"The Best of Altan": http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Best-of-Alt ... 52&sr=8-18

That's a great idea by the way for your dad. :)

Altan are working on a live album:
Click here and read near bottom of the article

An Mairéad is working on a new solo album:

Quick edit: I found this as well on the Dutch Wikipedia page for Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, and Altan have done another live album I've not heard of:

I was lucky enough to see both Mairéad and Altan as a band play in Donegal this winter, I was most impressed with her playing and Altan were most impressive playing at the Dunlewey centre, methinks an amazon purchase may be needed.

A bit of announcement for some:

I've been working on Mairéad's website for a teeny while now and her début album will be limited to 2000 copies worldwide. Interest has also started brewing heavily in Japan, so if people want to hear 'Imeall', best head over to the website on February 1st. I've added Mairéad's own stories behind the songs, some of which are very personally dedicated. There is also a press release on 'Imeall' (meaning 'Edge' or 'Threshold', which Mairéad wrote herself rather than a glossy boring press release), so it's worth reading.

Mairéad's 'Imeall' is like Moya's 'Óró' in rarity. But, it's a stunning album, and will be available from her website as a download as well. Mairéad would like people to enjoy the album, but the price is less than the iTunes/AmazonMP3 price too and you get a PDF booklet. The main thing behind the album is that money is not the issue, but getting to know Mairéad is. It's the least commercial album she has ever worked on, having recorded with Dolly Parton and Altan for so many years, so just enjoy it. I've only heard a snippet of one track so far, but it's gorgeous.

Can't wait to hear the rest!!

Just a teeny update, there are samples of the new album on Mairéad's website. The song 'Mo Níon Ó' sounds stunning, Moya fans will definitely love it!
