Setanta or Séadanta, or Cúchulainn is one of Ireland's best known mythical heroes. There is a big wikipedia article on him at
http://url.ie/j4qd (Wikipedia) (for other languages, see the bottom left hand side of the article)

Roibeard Óg wrote:Chorus / Cúrfa
Go deo, deo sa tsaoil seo, sna laetha liom féin (Forever in this life, in my own days)
Tá ceomhrán an dúlra fan tsliabh (Natures dew lies by the mountain)

What brings you here, oh brave Cúchulainn
Young brave warrior, I do not fear
For I shall take you, to the land of shadows
Brave Setanta, mo laoch bheo [my brave hero]

Chorus/Cúrfa

How Many days of legend heroes
So remembered in their paths
So many seers I fear and many stories
Brave Setanta only a boy

Dún Eamhain Mhacha (Navan fort)
Caisleáin Ríthe (Castles of kings)
Cailleachaí Caointe (Keening women)
Fá bhruach an Challan (By the banks of the Callan - Armagh river)
(or, more likely ______ camán - ______ hurley)

Chorus/Cúrfa

One of those "mystical and mythical" songs in the Clannad repertoire, which I like a lot! I love the contribution of Leon here, and I somehow wished he would have contributed on more than just this song... I must dust off my book about Celtic mythology and remind myself how the story of Cú Chulainn really went...

I like this song, but it isn't one that lingers musically in my ears for some strange reason. I do like the mythical and mystical atmosphere of it tho! Wasn't this written by one of the Duggan brothers? They always come up with the most amazingly mystical songs :)

Thank you Roibeard for posting all those lyrics and translations, they are very helpful. :)

When I first heard Setanta I thought, this isn't going to be a song that will become a favourite, but I was wrong. After a few listens it suddenly moved me a lot. For me it is a song that keeps stuck in my head a lot! It is indeed very mystical and powerful. Great song!

Love,

Yvonne

And I quite like the "dichotomy" of the song music-wise, a calmer start which evolves into toe-tapping rhythms at the end...!

Brave Setanta, _______ __ (something in Gaelic, or ‘only a boy’?)
[/unquote]

For me the part after "Brave Setanta..." sounds like Gaelic. I wonder if those words could mean something like 'dog's heart' ? Just a guess, from what I know of the legend.

Susann, you are more than welcome! And I haven't been to Navan Fort since I was 8 (15 years ago!) years old, with my school class. Is it as beautiful now? I need to visit again soon!

I think I have filled in the missing words in the lyrics, but I can't be sure unless the band release the words. Fingers crossed! :D

It was very peaceful there :) but I didn't like the quarry :( very close to Navan Fort.
If you want to see some pics I took there last year open this link https://picasaweb.google.com/Susann177/ ... 2012Teil2# .
