Níl Sén Lá Question

I got Clannad - Collection The Collection and I've noticed Níl Sén La is different than on Ultimate Collection. What version is used for Ultimate Collection?

I'm afraid I'm not quite following the question, RunrigCorvusCoraxfan.

If my memory serves me correctly, the version on Ultimate Collection is a live performance from Germany (I think), complete with an introduction from Ciarán.

Is this what you meant?

I got Clannad - The Collection because this best-off includes a few old recordings. I was assuming Ní Sén Lá was same as Ultimate Collection.

Is one a live recording and the other the original studio recording, which is on 'Clannad'? That might explain it as they are likely to be very different. I don't have either of those compilation albums I'm afraid, but I know that the versions of Nil s'en la that I have on 'Clannad' and 'Clannad in Concert' are very very different indeed, so that might be your answer. Similarly, if they are both live recordings done at different times then they are likely to be very different also :) No two live performances are the same.

I thought it was live version from Clannad in Concert but having played Clannad 1 on cassette; it wasn''t that version. Ultimate Collections has 7 tracks from early Clannad. The version is from 1973.

If Clannad - The Collection has also got the track Down by the Sally Gardens on it then Nil sen La is a live recording indeed.

I don't have nor know the other collection you mention so I don't know for sure but it might be the version that appears also on Clannad 1.

Just my two cents guess :)

Hmmm....this is getting rather interesting.

I've just found a version of Nil Sén Lá on YouTube that seems to imply it's been taken from Clannad - The Collection. If it's genuinely from there, then it's definitely not the same as the version on Ultimate Collection, as it sounds like a studio recording. As I mentioned, the version that is on Ultimate Collection is definitely a live recording.

That said, I've just compared the "Collection version" to the version on Clannad (1), and the two seem to be in different keys! :?

I know this hasn't answered your question really, RunrigCorvusCoraxfan - but I can see why you were asking now..... I'm curious myself as to where these different versions have sprung up from!

Nope very different. This is The Collection version

Clannad 1 Version - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sD6c-spsULM

I got Clannad 1 on cassette, and I can vouch the version is not same.

The version on Clannad in Concert sounds like one from Ultimatae Collection.

Part 2

What I find funny; whilst the version from Ultimate Collection sounds like Clannad In Concert the songs is over 11:29 on ultimate collection.

I just checked Clannad in Concert, the songs is 10:20 (unless someone has that album can confirm for me). According to youtube; this version has speech like Ultimate Collection but is a minute shorter. On The Collection, it doesn't have the speech, so I was wondering if this was a different version.

I could send Ultimate Collection version as a email, just send me a pm..

I don't know if you are able to pull it off but perhaps posting a shot of the front covers of both albums may avoid us from becoming confused?

Coz I'm afraid we're getting mixed up as to which "collection" is which.

Love,
Phantas

Ah, the Clannad Collection one I also have :) The version on that one is definitely a live version, it's a whopping 12 or 13 minutes if I'm not mistaken ;) and very different from the studio version as well.

And I recognize the other one also, but I (naturally) didn't buy it because I just about have a lot of tracks already. :) So can't help you with that one :)

One recording has been used for The Collection,Clannad In Concert and The Ultimate Collection. The spoken words are missing on The Collection [10:28],but are present on Clannad in Concert [11:29] and The Ultimate Collection[11:28].
The end is identical on all 3,the applause starts around 30 seconds before the end of the track. It's followed by a 'strange' sound, a ' thank you' and more applause. :D

True but Clannad in Cocert version is only 10.20

So if it was taken from Clannad in Concert, Ultimate Collection be finished about 10.20 in length, but is over 11:29. The Collection is 10.30, 10 mins longerthe Clannad In Concert.

The information regarding the length of the song on the cover of Clannad in Concert is wrong, you can easily check this by playing the song.I have all the cd's ripped to my M drive, the screenshot below shows the correct time. :)

I get you; I find it weird. Did Clannad in Concert come out in 1979 and the songs was from 1978 tour. If that was case; why in Ultimate Collection it states this.

4. Nil Sen La (Live)

(Traditional Arranged by Brennan) Tamsin Music Ltd
Produced by Nicky Ryan
℗1973 Blackbird

Yet for Down By The Sally Gardens

5. (Traditonal Yeats, Arranged By Brennan) Ogham Music/Tamsin Music Ltd
Produced by Nicky Ryan
℗1979

Now if I'm not mistaken Clannad In Concert came out in 1979, so Sally Gardens must had come from there. But as for Nil Sen La, it said ℗1973 Blackbird, so version on Ultimate Collection must come from another source.
