It's funny, I knew that this song had been written by Moya before I looked into the booklet. "Of this land" fits the album well, but there is also something very special and very Moya-ish about it. I like the melody, the beautiful and thoughtful lyrics and I also like the message of this song. It is one of my favourites on "Landmarks".

Well, G, i think you're crazy but not for any reason relating to 'of this land'...

I think it's a gorgeous song- really really really nice. Comes pretty high on my list of favourites, but not the most high I dont think. With clannad, however, my favourite song one day can be totally different to the next day. Of this land certainly has a great tune and lyrics- definately one of clannad's better recordings :)
We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.

I love this song as well, it was The song that made me love Moya's songs and voice.. I adore this song, and of all the cd's of Clannad I have (about 5) I think Landmark and Of this land is the best cd/song there is :)

'Of this Land' is such a strange and mysterious song, I'm fond of it, but, like all Clannad's music, it depends on what mood I'm in as to what songs I listen to. I haven't heard 'Of this Land' for a while now, but the line that stands out is 'all the flowers grow as I open out my hand'.
Behind the innocent,
the last, the least and the lost
will be found in the storm

Yeah, that's such a gorgeous line - in fact the whole chorus, oh, let's face is, the song!....(let me refer to Celtic Lyrics Corner)

How gentle was the breeze that surrounded the way
How loud the sea's roar on the four winds everyday
Sharing love, wounded gifts from ancient long ago
Together they closed in the circles we know

Will we treasure all the secrets with life's changing scenes?
Where our hearts were warm with love, so much love
Will the flowers grow again as I open out my hand?
Precious time, time for healing the beauty of this land
(2x)

How soulful those words that confuses the way
How wild the mountains' stare as they guard our every day
Take for granted noble hearts in the golden age that's flown
Between us, recall on a strong road we've known

Will we treasure all the secrets with life's changing scenes?
Where our hearts were warm with love, so much love
Will the flowers grow again as I open out my hand?
Precious time, time for healing the beauty of this land

For me I think the best lines are "Sharing love, wounded gifts from ancient long ago/Together they closed in the circles we know
Not sure why

Will the flowers grow as I open out my hand?

Best line, before I read the lyrics, I thought it was all the flowers...

That would be a bit better, happier in a sense, but will the flowers grow if we let them?

Loch na Caillí, for me, echoes Irealands troubled past, as does this song. They're both fabulous songs.

I think either interpretation works out just as beautiful. I see exactly what you're saying about 'all the flowers' - really beautiful, but 'will the flowers' can almost be seen exactly the same....does that make a word of sense? lol

Yes it does, but no, it doesn't. My interpretation is that Máire opens her hand and all the flowers grow again. But will the flowers grow again? Is more sad, more like a definitive no. To me, it is like a rhetorrical question, she knows the answer is no. I think the flowers are the image of the fighting in Ireland and the atroccoties that may have occurred when she was groing up, and long into her adulthood.
