I also prefer Máire because it is closer to the real pronounciation of her name than Moya ... at least for me and the rest of the Irish speaking bunch of people

hm...I do recognise that preference for the original spelling of Máire...especially in the beginning when she had just changed it to the phonetic spelling...However, I mus say that I quite quickly got used to the new spelling...I wonder what her own experience is now she has been using this new spelling for the past two (?) years.

I also prefer her real name to the artist name she took. Even though I can understand it gets a bit annoying with people never getting it right. I was mightely dissapointed when she did change her name. It took a bit of the magic away for me. I also recall her saying somewhere she never would. So I must say I was more than a bit surprised.

But I got used to it now, it didn't change her as a person did it!

A little quote from Moya herself...(it's from an interview we did with her about a year ago)

"And so, you know, after so many years, I wasn’t winning anywhere because first of all people would call me Marie, Mary, and now because of the computer age, the computer was spellchecking my name in Marie! Even in Ireland, my voting cards, everything is in Marie. And I am kind of go, ‘what’s this about’! And that probably even annoyed me more than people saying ‘Maire’ or Majre or whatever. I am not a Majre or Marie...
People would hear my name on the radio, maybe a DJ would say; ‘new Moya Brennan album’. And people would go into the record stores and say can I have the new Moya Brennan album? And the young kid there would be saying WHO?!?! We have a Marie Brennan album or whatever, but we have no Moya Brennan album! So it just wasn’t working! Maybe after so many years, maybe because Enya did it so many years ago maybe it’s the reason I didn’t do it, but at this stage, I don’t care what people think.
I thought this is what people think: Oh, I am trying to be like Enya to change my name phonetically and all this but I don’t care, I don’t care what people think anymore" (laughing). We: "It’s just easier!"
Moya: "it is! And is lovely to hear people saying my name right! So it’s nice. ".

I voted for Moya. It is because I know her solo work more than Clannad and I really love her music soooooooooooo much :)

The poll has shut down and thank goodness as its difficult to seperate Moya from Clannad as many struggle with. Moya has a wonderful voice which we all enjoy.

Over the years I have begun to really understand the talent of both Ciran and Pol, more recently Noel and Padraig. I hope we haven't seen the last of them working together and I'm ready to make the trek back to Gweedore (Gaoth Dobhair - go figure that pronunciation you anglophiles?) to hear them play together again.

On the spelling of Moya's name - gaelic is so difficult phonetically. I remember one evening in Sydney, Australia, Ciran & Tim trying to get me to pronounce Maire's took several beers and the suggestion...its like Enya...but its Moya! Later I got admonished by Baba for calling Ciran...Seeran...a C's not a K to me...can't win. But finally I think I have it worked out....we Aussies are pretty fast learners?

Tough tough tough tough...

can't choose really - but went with Clannad because I discovered them with Robin Hood, but apart from that they have more haunting melodies than Moya. And haunting is what I like 8)

Ofcourse Moya has some of her own but with her it's still more earthbound...whereas some stuff Clannad wrote is just downright ghostly!

So, Clannad it is.

As much as I love Clannad I have to agree with Niamh. I may never own all of Clannads music but I will own all of Moya's. :D

hmmmmmmmmmmmm. Toughie. I voted Clannad. I'm actually listening to 'Of This Land' as I type. I think I chose Clannad because, I have only their albums, and it was also the starting point for Máire Ní Bhraonáín's career in music.

Moya's still good though. I love them all. Including Enya.
